Letter from the President
A kind summer has come
and gone and we are now in an autumnal mode. Time for harvesting: cleaning up
and disposing spent leaves and gathering special seedpods for sowing later in
winter.
We are very excited to have Mike Petrie of J. Franklin Styer Nurseries in
Concordville, Pa.,as the speaker at our November 6th meeting. I am sure most of
you are familiar with Mikes innovative garden designs for the Pennsylvania
Horticultural Societys Philadelphia Flower show
each March. We look forward to finding out from Mike how we can be more creative
in our own gardens.
Jumping ahead to the March 19, 2005 meeting, our headliner is DVHSs Charlie
Seaver. I know we all will be looking forward to being there. Full details will
be in our Winter 2005 newsletter, which you will be getting in your mailboxes in
February. Mark this March 19th Saturday date on your 2005 calendars now. Julys
wonderful meeting was hosted by Wayne and Doris Guymon. Their garden, WynEden,is
fabulous! We had a beautiful day, a nice auction and, yes, I won the raffled
stepping stones.
Thank you, Wayne and Doris, for your hospitality.
If you missed the Guymons garden, do not fret. It is a scheduled tour garden at
the 2006 AHS National Convention. Information on Philadelphia 06: Hostas by
Design is in this newsletter. By the way, you can guarantee yourself a tour of
all the gardens by volunteering as a bus captain. This was my first job at a
national convention and it was a lot of fun and easy to do. You will be the face
of the DVHS for the Friday and Saturday garden tours. The conventions
transportation committee will provide everything you need. Just bring your
smile!
The 2006 convention, while still a while away, is prominent in my thoughts.
Conny Parsons, Barbara Tiffany and I (were the co-chairs) have begun reaching
out to the DVHS membership for help to fill our long wish list for support. We
are approaching this convention with an avantgarde spirit, planning to include
something for everyone, old and new hosta gardeners and nursery
people. Please remember that this is your convention. We want to hear from you.
Please contact any of us on ideas and especially assistance.
We launched the Philadelphia 06 Convention Shirt at the FIRST LOOK meeting in
Schenectady, New York, in July...and it was a big success. This is not another
T-shirt! Its a wellmade polo shirt in hosta colors with a beautiful logo,
designed by Conny and Barbara, embroidered on the upper-left front. These shirts
will be on sale at our November 6th meeting. Price: $25.00
each. They are certain to become hot collectibles for the hosta connoisseur.
Lastly, I have a very special announcement. Wayne Guymon has accepted the
nomination for the office of DVHS Vice President. Already he is acting in this
role and doing a splendid job. I am very happy to be working with Wayne, and the
entire club will benefit form his contributions.
On behalf of our members, thank you, Wayne.
